Please Note: I am no longer updating or maintaining this site, I will leave it up for a while, and may post the odd download link for a file, but I won't add anything major, or fix broken links etc. I may or may not rebuild the entire site over the summer.

Bahn is a German program created by Jan Bochmann to simulate Railway, Tramway (Streetcar) and LRT (Light Rapid Transit) systems. Large networks can be simulated and a variety of steam, diesel and electric trains can be operated as well as a large number of trams and underground railways.
On Bahn many functions are available, Working colour light and semaphore signals, working points (switches), many possible routes, shunting, and basically everything that a real railway does.

Bahn is far more useful and costs far less than a model railway. Although you do not get 3D graphics yet, you get as large a network as will fit into the 8192 by 8192 grid. Also you get scale speeds and scale time station stops. Bahn is completely automatic so you can control one train and the others will carry on unless a major problem occurs. The best trick when working with Bahn is to think big. Think of as large a system as you want and then input it as opposed to using a small plan and compressing things as you would for a model railway.
.
The current version of Bahn is 3.59. This was released at the beginning of 2000. It comes in German. It is available at Jan Bochmann's website and English documentation is available on Alan Flavell's site.
There are also some layouts on this site designed to run under its predecessor, Bahn 3.58.

I personally have found this program very enjoyable and I have enjoyed being able to create entire railway networks. I feel that if you do not already have this program and have an interest in creating railway systems then it is definitely one worth downloading and paying the small registration fee for. Bahn 3.58 and 3.59 are downloadable from

Many thanks to Jan Bochmann for allowing me to use some of these pictures.
